SRINAGAR, Mar 15 (Agencies): The Khelo India Winter Games second phase 2025 concluded on March 12 in Gulmarg. The event, initially planned for February, had to be postponed due to dry weather conditions in the valley.
This was the second leg of the Winter games. The first leg of the games was held in Leh district of Ladakh in January where athletes competed in ice hockey and ice skating events. In the second leg, competitions in Gulmarg were held in skiing and snowboarding.Jammu and Kashmir travel guide
Talking to Greater Kashmir, a J&K Sports council official said Gulmarg witnessed a thrilling display of talent from all the states. The grand total of the event stood at 97 medals, comprising 32 gold, 32 silver, and 33 bronze medals, he said.
As per the results declared by Khelo India, the final medal tally saw the Army and Himachal Pradesh emerging as joint leaders with 18 medals each, showcasing their dominance in the games held in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
The Army secured the top spot with 7 gold, 5 silver, and 6 bronze medals, while Himachal Pradesh closely followed with 6 gold, 5 silver, and 7 bronze medals.
Ladakh also made a strong impact by finishing third with 4 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medal.
Maharashtra secured 3 gold, 5 silver, and 5 bronze medals, while Tamil Nadu, ITBP, and Karnataka also found their place among the top competitors.
ITBP bagged 3 gold and 5 silver medals, whereas Tamil Nadu finished with 3 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze medals.
Karnataka followed with 2 gold, 3 silver, and 1 bronze medal.
According to the reports, women athletes have performed exceptionally well.
Himachal Pradesh athletes held their mark in the women’s Alpine Giant Slalom event. Anchal Thakur clinched the gold medal, while Tanuja Thakur and Suhani Thakur secured silver and bronze. The final day of the competition saw Himachal Pradesh further winning gold in the women’s relay event in ski mountaineering.
Jammu and Kashmir won two golds. Other states, including Telangana and Uttarakhand, also made their mark and secured multiple medals.
The occasion was graced by Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya who while addressing the occasion made a significant announcement regarding the future of winter sports in India.
He spoke about the government’s plan to develop Gulmarg into a Centre of Excellence for winter sports, promising top-tier infrastructure and training facilities for athletes.
Dr. Mandaviya also pointed to the government’s long-term commitment to sports development, mentioning India’s preparations for hosting the 2036 Olympic Games and the plan to draft a comprehensive 10-year roadmap aimed at advancing sports across the nation.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who was also present at the concluding ceremony expressed delight over the successful conclusion of the games.
