R S PURA, Jun 19: Samriddh Samaj Seva Sangathan (S-4), a prominent social organization working for public welfare, submitted a memorandum to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), R.S. Pura, highlighting several pressing civic and developmental issues affecting residents of Old Railway Line Patri, Panchayat Kotli Shah Doula and Gagian areas.
The memorandum, submitted by S-4 Chairman Amit Augustya, urged the administration to take immediate measures for cleaning blocked drainage channels, ensuring potable water supply under the Jal Jeevan Mission, restoring canal water for irrigation, and developing sports grounds for local youth.
Highlighting the issue of drainage, the organization pointed out that two naallahs under the Irrigation Department have become heavily clogged with silt and waste. Residents expressed concern that the blocked drains could trigger flooding during the forthcoming monsoon season, posing a serious threat to life and property. The organization demanded immediate desilting and cleaning of both water channels.
Regarding drinking water, S-4 stated that the area is heavily dependent on groundwater, the level of which has declined considerably in recent years. The organization appealed for expedited implementation of tap water connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission and sought repairs of several non-functional hand pumps installed by the Jal Shakti Department.
The memorandum also highlighted the plight of farmers in R.S. Pura, known for its fertile agricultural land. It noted that canal water has not been reaching agricultural fields for several years due to the poor maintenance and desilting of irrigation canals. As a result, farmers are increasingly relying on groundwater for irrigation, accelerating depletion of the water table. The organization requested immediate intervention to restore canal water supply and called for field visits by officials of the Agriculture and Irrigation Departments to assess the situation.
Emphasizing the need for sports infrastructure, S-4 sought fencing and leveling of two grounds located at Chak Talab and Gagian, which fall under the Auqaf Department. The organization stated that the absence of adequate sports facilities is depriving local youth and residents of recreational opportunities and space for physical activities, including morning walks.
The social organization urged the SDM to personally look into the matter and issue necessary directions to the concerned departments for the prompt redressal of all issues in the larger public interest.A copy of the memorandum has also been forwarded to the Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, for information and appropriate action.
