JAMMU, Jun 29: Expressing concern over the raging fires in Manipur seized by repeated cycles of violence, bloodshed, arson, and mayhem for the last over a month and a half, Harsh Dev Singh former minster and president of JKNPP has accused the centre and state government of complete failure in handling the situation resulting in unprecedented death, destruction and devastation in the troubled state. A combustible mix of faith, identity and politics has kept the pot of conflict boiling in the state with the present regime having miserably floundered in tiding over the crisis, Singh said.
As per certain reports in the media nearly 120 have been killed, 30,000 displaced, around 50,000 relocated due to raging violence and several thousand injured, divulged Singh. He said that it was shocking to note the statement of Archbishop of Manipur who had revealed that 249 churches had been burnt merely in 36 hours. And still the centre seems to have abdicated its responsibility under the constitution for reasons best known.
Should the present government be allowed to continue in the state merely for the reason that it is the BJP which rules it. And should the state of Manipur not be divested of its state status, as was done in case of J&K, and it also be divided into Union Territories? Questioned Singh.
Harsh Dev pointed out that J&K state was demoted and bifurcated into two Union Territories with the BJP government justifying the action on the pretext of violence and insurgency. Applying the same yardstick, Manipur has definitely qualified to be bifurcated into Union Territories in conformity with the policies of the BJP led NDA government.
Singh added that the BJP government has most vociferously taken the stand that there can’t be two sets of laws in the same country. It is further insisting on uniform civil code (UCC) in the country even if it has to downplay the aspirations of a particular community or inspirational group. Having said so, it needs to prove that action taken against J&K was not out of hostility, malice or ill will but genuine decision based on a well conceptualised policy that would be applicable to any other state of the country facing insurgency and bloodshed including BJP ruled states like Manipur.
