Max Hospital gives new lease of life to teenager boy

CHANDIGARH, Oct 7: A teenager with severe gastrointestinal bleeding, got a new lease of life after a successful treatment at Max Hospital, Mohali. The 17-year-old Aman’s condition was complicated by anaemia, abnormal blood clotting and abnormal liver-function parameters, requiring intensive monitoring and multiple blood transfusions.

He was suffering from fever for 10–12 days, along with poor appetite and reduced food intake. He later developed yellowing of the eyes and dark-coloured urine, followed by repeated episodes of fresh blood in his stools.

Despite intensive medical management and multiple blood transfusions, his haemoglobin continued to fall, dropping to a dangerously low. The colonoscopy revealed multiple ulcers in the lower part of the small intestine and the surrounding bowel, the exact source of the bleeding could not be identified.

Max’s multidisciplinary medical team led by Dr. Amandeep Singh Sandhu, Associate Director – GI, MAS & Bariatric Surgery performed a specialised surgery, exploratory laparotomy with on-table enteroscopy to identify and control the source of bleeding. To stop the blood loss and stabilise the patient , the Max surgeons removed nearly 200 cm of the diseased intestine along with a portion of the large intestine and created a temporary passage for waste to leave the body while the intestine healed.

With continued multidisciplinary care, the boy made a steady recovery and was discharged in a stable condition after 6 days.
