KATRA, Sep 22: The National Service Scheme (NSS) at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) conducted its Orientation Day in an inspiring and vibrant manner, introducing students to the spirit, purpose and values of NSS while highlighting the role of youth in community service and nation-building.
The orientation served as an engaging platform for volunteers to understand that NSS is not merely an extracurricular activity, but a journey of service, learning, leadership, teamwork and personal growth. The programme highlighted the guiding philosophy of NSS, “Not Me But You,” which encourages young people to move beyond individual interests and work towards the welfare of society. The programme featured insightful addresses by Dr. Rajiv Kumar, NSS Programme Coordinator, who spoke about the vision and objectives of NSS and encouraged students to actively participate in community-oriented initiatives.
He emphasized the importance of developing a sense of responsibility, empathy and commitment among young volunteers.
Adding further enthusiasm to the occasion, NSS volunteers shared their perspectives on the significance of NSS, its motto and the experiences and opportunities it provides to students. Their interaction reflected how NSS enables students to step beyond the classroom, engage with real-world challenges and contribute meaningfully to society.
The event beautifully brought together the values of service, culture, teamwork and youth leadership, giving both new and existing volunteers a deeper understanding of what it means to be part of NSS.
At SMVDU, NSS has been actively involved in community outreach, awareness programmes, environmental initiatives, educational activities and other social-service efforts, providing students with opportunities to learn through meaningful engagement with society.
The Orientation Day concluded on a positive and motivating note, with volunteers carrying forward the spirit of “Not Me But You”—a reminder that true growth comes not only from what we achieve for ourselves, but also from what we contribute to the lives of others.
