JAMMU, Sep 18: Expressing concern over criminal and violent incidents reported in Jammu city in recent days, Sapna Hindu, General Secretary of Hindu Vahini, has urged the Police and Administration to further strengthen law-and-order and public-safety measures across the city.

Sapna Hindu referred to the death of Deepak Sharma following a firing incident in Resham Ghar Colony on September 17, describing the incident as a matter of concern. She called for a prompt, impartial and transparent investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and bring the facts to light. She said that if any person is found responsible for a criminal act, appropriate action should be taken strictly in accordance with law.

She said the recent incidents have created concern among residents and underlined the need for stronger preventive policing rather than relying only on action after an offence has occurred. She urged the Police Department to increase night patrolling, mobile patrols and police presence in sensitive areas of the city.

The Hindu Vahini leader also called for regular monitoring of CCTV cameras installed in markets, residential colonies and other important public locations to ensure that the surveillance network remains effective. She suggested that special attention be given to areas where complaints related to theft, snatching, assault and other criminal activities are frequently reported. She further urged local police stations to regularly review crime patterns and undertake preventive measures accordingly.

Sapna Hindu said the safety of women, children and senior citizens should remain a priority. She called for enhanced police presence around markets, parks, religious places, educational institutions, transport points and other public areas, particularly during evening and night hours.

She also appealed to citizens to cooperate with the Police and report suspicious activities promptly instead of taking the law into their own hands. She said responsible cooperation between residents and law-enforcement agencies can contribute to maintaining public safety.

Sapna Hindu said preventing young people from becoming involved in crime and substance abuse requires coordinated efforts by families, educational institutions, civil society organisations and the Administration. She called for greater opportunities for youth through sports, education, skill development and constructive social activities, along with stronger awareness programmes against drugs and criminal activities.

She said effective communication between the Police and the public can play an important role in preventing crime. She suggested regular interaction between police officers, market associations, residential welfare groups and local residents to identify security concerns at the grassroots level and address them through appropriate measures.

She also appealed to people not to circulate unverified information or rumours on social media regarding criminal incidents, stating that such information could create unnecessary fear and confusion. She stressed the importance of verified communication, particularly in sensitive cases.

Sapna Hindu urged the Police and Administration to strengthen night patrolling, CCTV surveillance, timely and impartial investigation of criminal cases, police visibility in markets and public places, and protection of women, children and senior citizens. She also called for intensified awareness programmes against drugs and youth involvement in crime and better coordination between police authorities and local citizen organisations.

She said Jammu has a long-standing identity as a peaceful city known for social harmony and brotherhood, and every effort should be made to preserve this environment.

“The objective should not be to create an atmosphere of fear, but to build a safer Jammu where every citizen can live without fear. Those found violating the law must face prompt and impartial action, while the Police and Administration must strengthen preventive measures to ensure that such incidents do not recur,” she said.

She reiterated that Hindu Vahini stands for public safety, the rule of law and social harmony and would continue to support constructive efforts aimed at making Jammu safer and more secure for all citizens.
