SRINAGAR, Aug 22: Mohammad Faheem Reshi, Senior Independent Political Leader, contested candidate from 25-Eidgah Constituency, Chairman Greater Shah-re-Khaas and Senior Independent Youth Leader of Shah-re-Khaas, strongly criticised the reported 6.83% increase in power tariffs from September, describing it as an additional financial burden on the common people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Reshi said the government had come to power making major promises, including the provision of 200 units of free electricity. However, instead of delivering meaningful relief to consumers, people were now being confronted with higher electricity bills. He said the tariff hike was contrary to the expectations of ordinary households already facing economic pressures.

“From promises of 200 units of free electricity to a 6.83% tariff hike, the people of J&K are being made to pay the price. This is not the relief people were promised. The government’s report card is becoming clearer—less relief, more burden on ordinary households,” Reshi said.

Questioning the government’s priorities, Reshi said that after nearly two years in office, the administration should focus on reducing the hardships faced by ordinary families, traders, workers and economically weaker sections instead of adding to their financial burden. He urged the government to adopt policies that provide tangible relief to consumers.

Reshi demanded that the government immediately reconsider the proposed tariff hike, fulfil its commitment regarding free electricity and introduce genuine relief measures for consumers, particularly poor and economically vulnerable families. He stressed that the government must take into account the financial difficulties faced by households while deciding essential service tariffs.

“People do not need slogans or political promises; they need delivery, accountability and affordable electricity. The government must listen to the voice of ordinary consumers and act before this additional burden becomes unbearable,” he said.

Reshi further maintained that affordable electricity is not a luxury but an essential requirement for every household. He called upon the government to ensure that its policies protect the interests of the common people and do not further increase their economic pressure.
