JAMMU, Aug 21: The Department of Environmental Sciences, G.G.M. Science College, Jammu, in collaboration with the Department of Ecology, Environment and Remote Sensing (DEERS), J&K, organised a training programme on Composting to create awareness and provide practical, hands-on knowledge of scientific biodegradable waste management and compost preparation.
The programme was organised under the guidance of Principal, Prof. (Dr.) Romesh Kumar Gupta, who highlighted the importance of sustainable and environmentally responsible practices on the college campus. He appreciated the initiative of the Department of Environmental Sciences and its collaboration with DEERS, J&K, aimed at promoting practical and effective solutions for biodegradable waste management. Dr. Gupta further added that, the initiative is a commitment to environmental sustainability, responsible waste management and practical environmental education, while encouraging participants to adopt composting and other sustainable practices in their daily lives towards the vision of a Clean and Green campus.
Dr. Neha Sharma, Head, Department of Environmental Sciences, coordinated the programme, with Prof. Poonam Kundan, Assistant Professor, actively contributing to its organisation and execution. Dr. Upma Dutta, Senior Assistant Professor and Research Resource Person, shared her expertise on the role of microorganisms and biological processes in decomposition and organic waste management. Her areas of specialisation include Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPRs), endophytes, biofertilizers, bacterial pigments and probiotics.
The training brought together students, gardeners, Safai Karamcharis and college staff. Through interactive presentations, demonstrations and practical sessions, participants were trained in waste segregation, handling of biodegradable material and scientific methods of compost preparation. The technical team from DEERS, J&K, comprising Rakesh Abrol, Environmental Soil Conservationist (ESC) and Coordinator, DEERS-EIACP HUB; Sh. Anil Sharma, Range Officer; Dr. Kirti Bhatt, Programme Officer, DEERS-EIACP HUB; Dr. Padma Sharma, Project Director; Nitin Sharma, IT Officer, DEERS-EIACP HUB; and Sh. Chetan Gupta, Data Entry Operator, DEERS-EIACP HUB, provided valuable technical guidance and practical inputs throughout the programme.
The training emphasised that composting is an eco-friendly method of managing biodegradable waste that can significantly reduce the quantity of waste requiring disposal while producing nutrient-rich organic manure. It can also improve soil health and support sustainable gardening and landscaping practices on the college campus.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Muzaffar Ahmed Sheikh, Head, Department of Water Management.
