JAMMU, Aug 7: The Jammu and Kashmir Unit of the All India Gujjar Mahasabha (AIGM) welcomed the Jammu and Kashmir Government’s recent circular directing the expeditious implementation of the Forest Rights Act (FRA), describing it as a significant step towards protecting the rights and dignity of tribal communities across the Union Territory.
Addressing a press conference at the Press Club, Jammu, AIGM State President Bashir Ahmed Kohli, accompanied by senior office-bearers, expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Minister for Tribal Affairs and Forests Javed Ahmed Rana for initiating measures aimed at ensuring effective implementation of the Act. He said the move would help safeguard the interests of marginalized tribal communities and strengthen their socio-economic security.
The Mahasabha also expressed deep concern over the damage caused by recent heavy rainfall and natural calamities in different parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Kohli urged the administration to provide immediate relief and adequate financial compensation to families affected by floods and landslides, particularly those who have suffered losses of life, livestock, and property.
Highlighting the issue of unemployment, the organisation reiterated its demand for the early restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, stating that it would contribute to economic growth, employment generation, and the fulfilment of the democratic aspirations of the people.
While welcoming the implementation of the Forest Rights Act, the Mahasabha drew attention to the plight of the Dudhi Gujjar community, many of whom reside along riverbanks and streams and remain vulnerable to recurring natural disasters. The organisation urged the government to formulate a comprehensive long-term rehabilitation policy to ensure their safety, livelihood security, and socio-economic development.
Among those present at the press conference were Ali Khan, General Secretary; Noor Ali Choudhary, Vice President; Shoukat Chowdhary, District President; and Bagh Hussain, District Rural President. The leaders reaffirmed the Mahasabha’s commitment to advocating for the welfare, rights, and development of tribal communities across Jammu and Kashmir.
