Chandan Datta meets Union Minister Ramdas Athawale, submits memorandum on reservation policy

JAMMU, Jul 30: Social activist and Chairman of Kotli Welfare Trust, Chandan Datta, met Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Athawale and held detailed discussions on issues concerning the country’s reservation policy.

During the meeting, Datta submitted a memorandum outlining concerns related to opportunities available for candidates belonging to the General Category and sought a review of the existing framework.

According to Datta, opportunities for General Category candidates have diminished over the years, making it increasingly difficult for many meritorious students to secure admission to educational institutions or obtain employment despite achieving high scores in competitive examinations. He urged the Union Government to examine the matter carefully and ensure that deserving candidates receive fair opportunities.

Datta also highlighted the psychological pressure faced by students preparing for competitive and entrance examinations. He said the intense competition, coupled with limited opportunities, often places students under severe mental stress. Referring to incidents of student suicides reported in different parts of the country, he appealed for a sensitive and balanced approach while addressing issues related to admissions and recruitment.

In his memorandum, Datta suggested that reservation benefits should be linked to economic criteria so that assistance reaches citizens who are genuinely economically disadvantaged. He requested the Government to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the economic condition of beneficiaries while formulating future policies.

Emphasizing the importance of merit in sectors that directly affect public welfare, Datta stated that healthcare is a highly sensitive field where competence and professional excellence should remain a priority to ensure quality medical services and strengthen the nation’s healthcare system.

During the interaction, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale received the memorandum and assured Datta that the concerns raised would be given due consideration. Datta expressed hope that the Government would examine the issues objectively while safeguarding the interests of all sections of society.

He added that if the concerns remain unresolved, various social organizations may collectively raise the matter through democratic and peaceful means in the future.
