Army showcases technological edge with spectacular drone display
DRASS, Jul 25: The 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas was commemorated with immense patriotic fervour at the picturesque Lamochen Viewpoint in Drass — located at a staggering altitude of 11,500 feet. Overlooking the iconic battlefields of Batra Top, Tiger Hill, and Tololing, the event was both a solemn tribute and a celebration of India’s indomitable spirit during the 1999 Kargil War.
The emotionally charged ceremony brought together gallantry awardees, Veer Naris (war widows), war veterans, and the next of kin (NoKs) of fallen soldiers, honouring the sacrifices that secured India’s victory in one of the most grueling mountain wars in history.
Lt.Gen.Pritik Sharma Northern Command as the chief guest and felicitated Veer Naris, Kargil heroes, and families of the martyrs in recognition of their immense courage and service to the nation.
The celebrations began with ‘Yudh Sansmaran’ (War Remembrance) and ‘Samman Samaroh’ (Felicitation Ceremony), featuring a breathtaking microlight aircraft flypast and a detailed battle briefing. War veterans shared powerful personal accounts of the 1999 conflict, offering a vivid glimpse into the bravery and hardships faced during the high-altitude operations.
The highlight of this year’s Kargil Vijay Diwas was a mesmerizing drone and robotics technology show, symbolizing the Indian Army’s transformation from traditional warfare to cutting-edge defense systems.
As dusk fell over the rugged Drass valley, the sky lit up with synchronized drone formations, showcasing an impressive array of advanced capabilities—from real-time surveillance and tactical delivery to precision strikes on enemy targets.
Logistic Drones capable of operating at altitudes of 4,000 meters, designed to deliver critical supplies across treacherous terrain. Robotic Dogs, engineered to carry ammunition, navigate rough landscapes, and assist in patrolling operations along the Line of Control.
A senior Army official highlighted that many of these technologies were indigenously developed, and emphasized their importance in enhancing operational efficiency, improving logistics, and minimizing risk to soldiers in extreme weather and difficult terrains. “These systems extend our operational reach while safeguarding our troops by taking on high-risk tasks in forward areas,” the official noted.
Observed annually on July 26, Kargil Vijay Diwas marks India’s decisive victory over Pakistani intruders in the 1999 war. More than 500 Indian soldiers made the supreme sacrifice in reclaiming the heights of Kargil and upholding the nation’s sovereignty.
At Lamochen Viewpoint, with the national flag soaring high, war cries echoing in the mountains, tearful eyes of the families of martyrs, and the hum of futuristic drones overhead.
