Rare spinal aspergillus infection treated successfully at Livasa Hospital Mohali

JAMMU / ROPAR, Jul 17: “Spinal aspergillus infection is an extremely uncommon condition, especially in individuals with a normal immune system. Because its symptoms closely resemble spinal tuberculosis or even tumours, diagnosis can often be delayed or missed altogether. “

Addressing a press conference at Ropar on Friday, Dr. Vineet Saggar, Director–Neuro & Spine Surgery at Livasa Hospital Mohali said that recently we have successfully diagnosed and treated an exceptionally rare case of spinal Aspergillus infection in a 55-year-old woman who had endured months of severe pain after being repeatedly misdiagnosed.

He said that this case highlights the importance of maintaining a high index of suspicion, using advanced imaging, timely surgical intervention, and precise laboratory diagnosis to ensure the right treatment.

Early identification not only relieves pain but also prevents irreversible neurological damage, informed Dr Saggar.

Giving details of the case Dr Saggar further said that the patient had been suffering from excruciating back pain for nearly three months, leaving her bedridden and unable to carry out even basic daily activities.

During this period, she consulted multiple healthcare providers and underwent several investigations. Owing to the similarity of symptoms, she was initially diagnosed with spinal tuberculosis and started on anti-tubercular treatment. However, despite prolonged therapy, her condition failed to improve. A subsequent suspicion of a spinal tumour led to a Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC), which was inconclusive.

Considering the extent of infection and the patient’s deteriorating condition, the Livasa team recommended immediate surgical intervention. The surgery was successfully performed, resulting in significant pain relief within days.

The definitive diagnosis came after tissue samples collected during surgery were subjected to histopathological examination, which confirmed the presence of Aspergillus, a rare fungal organism affecting the spine. The patient was subsequently started on targeted antifungal therapy with Voriconazole, leading to an excellent recovery.

Today, she has regained her mobility and is able to walk pain-free after having been completely bedridden, said Dr. Saggar who is among the region’s leading neuro and spine surgeons.

Cases such as these reflect the strength of our multidisciplinary teams, advanced diagnostic capabilities and commitment to evidence-based care, said Anurag Yadav, CEO-Livasa Hospitals.
