JAMMU, Jul 8: Senior BJP leader and former Minister Bali Bhagat has strongly criticized the Congress party for opposing the proposed Constitutional Amendment Bill that seeks the automatic removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers and Ministers who remain in judicial custody for 30 consecutive days in serious criminal cases. Congress has termed the proposal “political vendetta” and vowed to block it.
Bali Bhagat said the Congress’ opposition has once again exposed its “double standards” on corruption and accountability. He alleged that while the party frequently speaks about transparency and clean governance, it is now resisting a measure that aims to ensure higher standards of public life for those holding constitutional offices.
He said that people occupying the country’s highest executive positions must uphold the highest ethical standards, and those facing prolonged judicial custody in serious criminal cases should not continue to hold executive office until the legal process is completed. According to him, the proposed legislation is intended to strengthen public confidence in democratic institutions and promote accountability in governance.
The senior BJP leader alleged that Congress’ resistance reflects its discomfort with stricter anti-corruption measures and urged the party to support reforms that enhance transparency instead of opposing them for political reasons. He said the nation expects political parties to stand with honesty, integrity and constitutional accountability above partisan interests.
